Home Baked Bread

Lately, by embracing my inner housewife, I have been baking like a crazy woman.  I've also been cooking and making things up from scratch, such as ice cream and butter, and it's been so satisfying and remarkably easy.  Today I made sweetened condensed milk from scratch, using homemade butter, which I then used to make my homemade vanilla ice cream.  This ice cream couldn't possibly be more homemade if I tried!  (ok...if I had milked the cow in the first place for the milk and the cream required for the ice cream then it would have been triple-decker homemade...but one day...when I have a farm of my own I'll get a house cow!  And I'll name her Daisy.)

So today I made bread.  It was my first attempt at doing it from scratch without the aid of a bread maker and I was really pleased with the result.  (I did a little dance of joy around the kitchen when it turned out!)  I found the recipe online, going for an 'Easy bake' bread that I knew that I could handle.  Despite my nerves (no idea why), it turned out to be easy to do (why was I so terrified of taking it on??) although there is a lot of waiting for the yeast to proof, waiting for the dough to rise, waiting again for the dough to rise.....but the actual baking part is really quick.....and before too long the smell of homemade bread is wafting through your kitchen and you are feeling very very happy!  Pity my husband wasn't home to experience it, he was off marking our lambs and doing other sheepy type things, but then...he has a terrible cold anyway and wouldn't have been able to smell it at all poor darling.

Anyway, my 5 year son loved it and hoovered two pieces...
This is it...all warm and straight from the oven, topped with homemade butter....Mmmmmmmmm!

Have you ever tried making bread?

  2. How marvelously scrumptious!!! There really is nothing more enticing or delicious smelling than fresh baked bread. These photos take me straight back to childhood memories of my mom's baking and how we would slather her homemade jam - often peach, apricot, or raspberry - on slices still delightfully warm from the oven. Yum!

Big hugs & happy start of August wishes!

    1. Thanks for stopping by Jessica, I popped your button on my blog, it's so cute! The bread has been lovely. I'm going to make jam soon, give that a go as I have never made it. It's coming towards the end of winter here but once summer rocks around, with all the lovely fresh stone fruit, I'm going to have lots of jam making sessions!

    1. It wasn't that hard, just a bit time consuming because you have to wait between doing things. However it was worth it, even just for the satisfaction of knowing you have done it all yourself!

    1. It was easier than I thought it would be (!), only a little time consuming waiting for everything to happen!

  5. Is it sad I've never made homemade bread? I'm sort of ashamed.... Have you ever made zucchini bread? Is it similar to this recipe? I have zucchini coming out my ears over here! haha

    1. I've never made zucchini bread, sounds good though. My mum has a good recipe for a zucchini slice which you make with lots of eggs, so it's kind of like a quiche but you make it in a slice tin. Yeah, when you grow zucchinis they go crazy all at once. My mother in-law ends up with heaps so I get given a lot. I make soup out of them. She has a great easy recipe.
